I enjoy walking in cemeteries. It’s true. Some of you may think that is really morbid or odd, but let me explain why I enjoy it. Cemeteries are a place I can go when I want to feel sad, contemplative, or curious.
Some days it is healthy to mourn, grieve, and accept that there is pain in your life. It is healthy to accept that but don’t let it take over your life. I have reason to mourn today as I was unable to attend a memorial service for an old friend. Another dear friend is beginning to fade away. It is hard. Going to the cemetery gave me time to consider them both and accept the inevitable.
But my favorite thing to do while I am there is to consider the lives of the people who are buried there. Why did they die that year? Why did they die so young? What where they like? Did they have a lot of friends or relatives? Does anyone remember who they were? The questions are endless. I like to imagine what their lives must have been like. Or ask, what advice would they give me if they could?
I love the peacefulness of cemeteries. It is almost as if time stands still while I am there. I can spends several hours studying the many headstones. There is always so much to think of.
It is my sincere hope that no one will be offended by my posting pictures of the cemetery. I can assure you that it isn't a lack of respect, but rather an abundance of respect for those who have gone on ahead.
